Leadership in mixed cities: women’s presence in the public sphere
On Friday July 29, a meeting took place in the framework of the change agents course for activists in mixed cities. The meeting included a presentation on the subject of gender and the presence of women in the public sphere by Prof. Hanna Herzog.
Prof. Herzog presented the history and the sociological development of the separation between the private and the public spheres and how this separation affected women. She argued that the separation is not a necessity and leads to the precedence of the public over the private sphere.
She elaborated on various mechanisms of control and devaluation of women in the public sphere. A motif that was repeated throughout the presentation was the importance of everyday practices over declarations. Following the presentation, the members of the group shared their practices in the various activities they conduct in mixed cities.
